What the Apple Music family plan actually is
The Apple Music family plan is a single subscription that lets up to six people stream the entire Apple Music catalog with their own accounts, libraries, and recommendations. At $16.99/month in the US, that works out to roughly $2.83 per seat when split evenly — less than a third of the $10.99 individual plan.
Step 1 — Set up Family Sharing
Family Sharing is Apple's group system; the Apple Music family plan rides on top of it. On iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Family Sharing → Set Up Your Family. On Mac: System Settings → Family. Choose an organizer (the person whose card is billed) and confirm a payment method — Apple requires one on file before invites can be sent.
Step 2 — Subscribe to the family tier
Open Apple Music → tap your avatar → Manage Subscription → pick Family. If you're upgrading from Individual, Apple prorates the switch automatically. Students on the $5.99 tier need to cancel first — Apple won't let you hold both.
Step 3 — Invite up to five other people
Back in Family Sharing, tap Add Member. You can send an iMessage invite, generate a link, or create a child account for kids under 13. Each invitee needs their own Apple ID — sharing one account across devices is not the same thing and will constantly log people out.
Step 4 — Managing members
- The organizer can remove anyone at any time from Family Sharing settings.
- Members can leave on their own; their library and playlists stay with their Apple ID.
- Apple limits you to joining a new family once per year, so plan invites carefully.

Common problems
"I invited someone but they can't stream"
They accepted the Family Sharing invite but didn't sign into Apple Music with the same Apple ID. Have them open Apple Music, tap their avatar, and confirm the account.
"Billing failed and everyone got kicked"
Apple pauses the family plan the moment the organizer's payment fails. Update the card in Settings → [your name] → Payment & Shipping and the family reactivates immediately.
